Quote of the day

The bleakest thing about [HBO's] The Wire is that it's ending after the current season. Desperate Housewives, meanwhile, is set to go on until 2011. Now that's a depressing thought.

Truer words have never been spoken. If you haven’t seen The Wire, do so as soon as possible.

Jimmy Kimmel responds to Sarah Silverman

In response to Sarah Silverman’s video, Jimmy Kimmel strikes back with an all-star cast including Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, Cameron Diaz, Joan Jett, Macy Gray, Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Pete Wentz, Perry Farrell, Benji and Joel Madden, Lance Bass, Huey Lewis, Josh Groban, McLovin and Meatloaf and more. Good grief, I didn’t know Kimmel had that much pull.

Brilliant!

Richard Zednik is a mutant

On Feb. 10, Richard Zednik of the Florida Panthers suffered a serious neck injury while playing in Buffalo. A teammate’s skate slashed Zednik across then neck, leaving a trail of blood across the ice as he rushed to the sideline for emergency medical attention.

This photo was taken on Feb. 21. Dude has a healing factor to rival Wolverine’s. Zednik says he is ready to return to the ice ASAP.

Hockey players are tough.

‘Wolverine’ movie turning into a bloated monster

Remember when you saw the first X-Men movie and were thrilled to see those characters come to life? Then, a few years later we were treated to X2: X-Men United and once again, we were all thoroughly impressed.

When it was announced that Bryan Singer would not be a part of X-Men: The Last Stand we all knew that it would not be as great as the first two, that was a given. However, nothing could have prepared us comic-book nerds for the crap-fest that was to be unleashed upon us.

Complicated characters with equally complicated histories, like Beast, Juggernaught, the Morlocks and Multiple Man, were reduced to one-shot gimmicks to be used and tossed aside. Coupled with that, hack director Brett Ratner and writers Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn turned one of the greatest comic book story arcs in history into a convoluted, plotless and pointless affair. Too many characters, too many plot holes and not enough character development.

I fear the Wolverine movie, dubbed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is headed down the same road.

First of all, Wolverine’s origin and the ‘Weapon X’ story is one of the most complicated in comic book history. To effectively tell the story on the big screen will be a feat unto itself. However, the movie is already bloated with too many characters that will no doubt be used for background filler and one-shot “ooh” moments.

On the list already:
Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed / Sabretooth
Lynn Collins as Kayla Silver Fox
Danny Huston as William Stryker
Daniel Henney as David North / Agent Zero
Will.i.am as John Wraith
Taylor Kitsch as Remy LeBeau / Gambit
Dominic Monaghan as Barnell
Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool

Then it has just been announced that Kevin Durand will appear in the movie as ‘The Blob.‘ While many of these characters I like, having them all in one movie is going to be a mess.

If the team behind this movie pulls this bloated mess off well I will be pleasantly surprised. And why Harry Connick Jr. was not tapped to play Gambit I have no idea.

Oh crap.

Ralph Nader announces third-party run for president

Ralph Nader is launching a third-party campaign for president.

The consumer advocate made the announcement Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." He says most Americans are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties, and that none of the presidential contenders are addressing ways to stem corporate crime and Pentagon waste and promote labor rights.

Nader also ran as a third-party candidate in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. He is still loathed by many Democrats who call him a spoiler and claim his candidacy in 2000 cost the party the election by siphoning votes away from Al Gore in a razor-thin contest in Florida.

Come on Ralph, you’re a good guy and all but let’s not screw things up.

Bill would make hanging noose to intimidate illegal

So wait, is this guy Bill making a noose in order to intimidate an illegal? Or are they just saying he “would” do it, if he had to? That’s what happens when illegals push Bill I guess, he gets making them darn hanging nooses.

Damn you Bill.

If this is in print tomorrow I’m sending it to CJR’s ‘The Lower Case.’ I think this is worth a free subscription.

Road rage + guns + idiots = FLORIDA!

Yet again, here’s more evidence of why more guns is not a good thing.

Here’s the scenario. Guy #1 is driving his kids to school. He gets behind guy #2 who is in a van in front of him. Guy #1 feels that guy #2 is driving too slow. He tries to pass, van speeds up. He starts racing the van and eventually gets in front of it. Van rear-ends guy #1.

Guy #1′s natural first instinct is to get out his gun and start blasting at guy #2. Guy #2′s instinct is of course to take out his gun and start firing back OK Corral style. Guy #1 then drops his kids off and pursues guy #2, gun in hand.

The result is a rolling gunfight in a residential neighborhood that ends in both individuals being arrested.

Here’s the kicker: Both drivers had legal permits to carry concealed weapons.

More guns does not equal a more just a safe society. Period.

This also proves that Darwin was right. It’s just too bad some kids were in the cross fire and a damn good thing they didn’t get hit. Guy #1 would be feeling like quite the fool (well more so anyway) if his kids had been riddled with bullets.
