Hitchens on Craig.

So Many Men’s Rooms, So Little Time

Thus, without overthinking it or attempting too much by way of amateur psychiatry, I think it’s safe to assume that many tearoom traders have a need, which they only imperfectly understand, to get caught. And this may be truest of all of those who are armored with “the breastplate of righteousness.” Next time you hear some particularly moralizing speech, set your watch. You won’t have to wait long before the man who made it is found, crouched awkwardly yet ecstatically while the cistern drips and the roar of the flush maddens him like wine.

I may disagree with Hitchens on a great many things, but more often than not the guy is not only bullseye accurate but witty as hell. Check it.

China to Lease Pandas for $1M

LIU JIN/AFP/Getty Images

No longer will China be merely handing over their pandas in order to foster diplomatic relations, they will now lease them for 10-years at a cost of $1M. This ends a 1,300-year era of China using the black-and-white bears in order to improve its relations with foreign countries. The lease program will no doubt help fatten China’s coffers.

Countries looking at the lease option just better make sure their panda isn’t covered in lead paint. Zing!

The Shock Doctrine

This is a video directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) for Naomi Klein’s new book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. From the website:
In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world– through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

Though you do have to wonder, if Naomi Klein were totally against capitalism wouldn’t she be giving the book away for free or at least not selling it through the major online and corporate retailers?

Federer Wins US Open

Roger Federer won his 4th US Open championship today. They say he is the greatest player of all time and he seems to be living up to it. He won $2.1 million and a car, not a bad two weeks of work.

In other sporting news Tiger Woods won the BMW Championship at Cog Hill, earning $1.26 million and taking the lead for the FedEx Cup. This brought his total career winnings to over $75 million. Fucking amazing.

Frontline PBS

It looks like my favorite news program is going to have another great fall season. Check out the preview video:
If that doesn’t get you amped then you are probably not a news dork like me. If you’ve never watched Frontline PBS I strongly encourage you to check it out, it’s worth it.

I most recently watched Endgame which has some stirring analysis of the Iraq War. Along with their other Iraq documentaries, The Lost Year in Iraq and Gangs of Iraq it makes a great trilogy of understanding of the Iraq War, the players involved and the hopes for the future.

The new season begins in October.
