Guns = Peace

Arms Sales in Gulf Will Counter Terrorism, Rice Says

Awesome idea!  Let’s give the Middle East just what they need, more guns!  You know because it’s worked so good for us in the past and it most likely won’t end up biting us in the ass later.  No way, that would never happen.  You know, because as soon as they are done using those guns and weapons to bring peace(?), they are just going to hang them up in the closet and never touch them again.

Hmm, I wonder if the military contractors getting that $20 billion will be making some sizable campaign contributions this year.  I’m willing to bet so.

            Will they ever learn?

Iron Man

Well I guess that answers that question. I was so afraid this was going to be terrible (*ahem* Daredevil, Fantastic Four, etc.), but Favreau seems to have made it decent. Though we’ll still have to wait and see what the final product looks like.

GOP YouTube Might Not Happen.

Seems the Grand Ole Party (though I’m starting to think that ‘P’ stands for something else, zing!) is a little afraid of what the general public wants to ask them. Now I will say they did pick some softball questions from some clearly Democratic supporters for the other debate, and it would be unfair to not let the GOP’s supporters ask their own softball questions, but this is just lame. Have some balls Republicans. If you stand by what you and your party do so strongly then man-up and deal with the real questions Americans with webcams want to know.

Honestly, you aren’t helping your case in any way fellas. Of course naturally the right-wing pundits will compare this to the Democrats not participating in the FOX debates, which is totally unfair. That was a total ambush and everyone knows it. Even GOP supporters are telling their candidates to participate to give them a chance to speak directly to them.

What gives?

Slave to Technology.

So the laptop, though working, has become touch-and-go like a patient on life support.  I can’t really move it or I will lose the power connection.  Sure, I could order a new mobo but that would cost $300+ plus installation on an outdated laptop.  Forget that mess, I needs a new toy.

So I dropped about $950 bones on a Dell Vostro through work (which hopefully means I get their service plan, sweet!).  The new Vostros are built for business and don’t come loaded with a bunch of garbage trial software and what have you.  I was going to splurge and get the Macbook but it just wasn’t in the cards.  I also snagged a 300GB external HDD to transfer all of my nonsense, and the old Acer has now become the Torrent box (while it lasts of course).  I forgot how much I missed torrenting free shit.

Over the last week and a half I’ve gotten seasons 1-6 of Smallville (it’s cheesy but I dig it), the third season of LOST, season 6 of Scrubs, Heroes and almost done with Michael Moore’s Sicko.  For some reason it won’t finish.  Any other suggestions of decent shows out there to catch up on?  I hear Weeds is good, but I don’t like pot and pot humor so I’m not sure.

And that is that, back to our regularly scheduled babble.  Grrr politics, movies, books….!

Taliban Kills S. Korean Hostage

This is not good.  Nor is anything else happening on that side of the world, but this further cements how much strength the Taliban has regained in Afghanistan.  So much for all of Bush’s “we’re winning” rhetoric that he loves to spout.  Of course the administration blames it all on Pervez Musharraf and his inability to route the Taliban from Waziristan, because we can’t be expected to clean up all of our own messes.

Responsibility, what’s that?

excuses

once again
I hear somebody who is going to
settle down and
do their work,
painting or writing or whatever,
as soon as they get a better light
installed,
or as soon as they move to a new
city,
or as soon as they come back from the trip they
have been planning,
or as soon as…

it’s simple; they just don’t want
to do it,
or they can’t do it,
otherwise they’d feel a burning
itch from hell
they could not ignore
and “soon”
would turn quickly into
“now.”

Trailer Park.

Someone was working overtime at the Apple trailers department and over the last week a whole gaggle of new ones got put up. I’m a sucker for movie trailers and if there were a channel with them on, I’d watch the damn things all day. There’s a subtle art to the movie trailer that can not only make or break a film, but through clever editing can lure you into a shitty film or through bad editing turn you away from a great one.

Some current notables:

Now this doesn’t necessarily mean that these are all going to be theater worthy, and some I even know for a fact will be NetFlix material. However these are the ones that immediately gave me the movie itch.

Sundays rule.

27 going on Retirement.

Getting up on a Sunday morning at the butt-crack of dawn to go fishing, then coming home to go out and hit golf balls for an hour which was followed by coming home and watching Sunday news shows, I realize that I am finally cresting that hill, in a way. I’m certainly not knocking on death’s door or anything, but man this makes me feel old(er). I think I even caught myself giving someone younger than me the “when I was your age…” line a few weeks ago.

I think I’m going to go and drink some cheap malt liquor and do something irresponsible just to level out the playing field.

And remember kids, the enemy of my enemy is my (violent and scary) friend.

CPDRC, the Prison of Dance.

BoingBoing and a friend recently posted some videos of prisoners at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller (see below). However the fun doesn’t stop there, there are also videos of prisoners dancing to Queen’s Radio Gaga as well as doing what is known as the Algorithm March. Curious to how they would get inmates of a correction facility to do this, and to see if this was just an elaborate PR stunt, I looked up the logic behind this.

Apparently the dancing and rhythmic marching is all a part of Cebu’s complicated penal system, created to cut down on gangs and jail guard corruption. According to Cebu website:

Cultural, behavioral

Security must be approached not only physically but also from the cultural and behavioral context.

Inmates at the CPDRC are required to go through a workout regimen. While the goal is to keep the body fit in order to keep the mind fit, such may not actually happen if it is not done in a manner deemed pleasurable. Music, being the language of the soul, is added to that regimen.

Decadent cultures in jails are only spillovers of the culture outside. In approaching behavioral and cultural change, one has to look at the decadence of society to change the culture in the jail.

To do away with inmate and jail guard politics, rehabilitation must employ divide and rule. This is meant to discourage organization among inmates, where inherently gang culture exists.

Here lies the blunder. Penology or jail management in this country has never looked at gang culture in jails as one that actually propagates corruption and decadent culture. In most cases, jail authorities support and tolerate gang culture without considering that it actually impedes rehabilitation.

Gangs breed corruption and corruption breeds enmity and animosity between inmates or between inmates and guards.

Four components

To prevent familiarity between inmates and guards, security is done in four component forces: the Capitol Civil Security Forces, which conducts surprise greyhound operations and is tasked to inspect visitors during visiting days; the jail guards, who have direct contact with the inmates; the Provincial Security Group, which escorts inmates to and from court hearings; and the blue guards that check on the three security components at the entrance of the facility.

While the old practice of using jail guards won’t vanish, a four-tiered check-and-balance approach is used to plug the gaps for corruption.

To do away with corruption in jail finances, budgets are allocated and released directly from the Capitol treasury. Fund management, especially on food, is taken away from jail authorities.

Inmates, too, are not allowed to hold cash. Money is considered illegal. A system is provided where inmates can entrust their cash to jail authorities and have these converted to purchase orders. This is to ensure that money won’t be used for the purchase of contraband and to discourage gambling.

While I’m sure the stuff written on the site is meant to glamorize and validate the system, it seems to be working quite well. I mean come on, when was the last time you saw prisoners in America (or anywhere else for that matter) doing this:

“Thriller”

“Radio Gaga”

“Algorithm March”

It may seem silly, but it looks to have its merits. Though I really can’t imagine the inmates of Oz doing a prison yard rendition West Side Story or The Safety Dance. Come on American penal system, we can’t let ourselves be outdone by the Filipinos, get out them jazz hands!
