From a Haaretz review of the new book Ariel Sharon: An Intimate Portrait
Speaking of George Bush, with whom Sharon developed a very close relationship, Uri Dan recalls that Sharon’s delicacy made him reluctant to repeat what the president had told him when they discussed Osama bin Laden. Finally he relented. And here is what the leader of the Western world, valiant warrior in the battle of cultures, promised to do to bin Laden if he caught him: “I will screw him in the ass!”
Ah Georgie, speaking as eloquently as always. This once again displays George’s silly and child-like grasp of reality. It also reaffirms his singular grasp of the actual situation with terrorists, this bizarre notion that if you just capture Osama Bin Laden (which we still should) that all Islamic terrorism will suddenly fall away.
No wonder other nations don’t have a lot of respect for our leader, he doesn’t know when to rein in the potty talk and be a professional. I know Bush is a good ol’ boy and all, but there’s a time and a place. Talking with another world leader is neither.

I'd never been much of a Beatles fans in my formative years, and only recently have I began listening to and appreciating their music. While it is cliché to jump on the “I love the Beatles” bandwagon, they are indeed pretty fucking great. This movie however focuses very little on the Beatles and as the name implies, focuses squarely on John Lennon in his later and more revolutionary years.
I must say that considering the current situation we are in this is quite an inspiring little film. The sad part is, that sort of artistic revolution would be extremely difficult to come by today. Sure the Dixie Chicks raised some eyebrows (though I do applaud their gusto) and still managed to win a bunch of Grammys. But could their music get someone out of jail, arouse the suspicion of the FBI or and the president?
With the current situation musicians and artists in general are in having to cater to studios, corporations and stuck in binding contracts, this sort of outspoken radicalism is nearly unheard of. I don't think anyone with the power and influence to do so is doing anything comparable to what John Lennon did to mobilize young people to protest. Hell, protest politics in general is dying these days. The sheer fact that protests are getting more organized, get permits and are allowed “protest zones” during large political events is counter to the entire nature of protest.
I say this while I sit here on my ass and piss and moan about the war. Hey, I'm just following John and Yoko's lead, except I'm blogging for peace instead of sitting in a hotel bed. If only I had a Yoko to hang with, except without the weird hair and better boobs, but I digress.
Excellent documentary, almost entirely archived footage and with interviews with people from all over the political spectrum. Put it on your list.

Bush and his cohorts have expended a great deal of effort and airtime trying to sell the case for military action against Iran. However new evidence from the Pew Research Center shows that this time, the American public isn’t buying:
In recent weeks, the Bush administration also has highlighted the increasing threat posed by Iran, both because of its nuclear program and its reported support for anti-U.S. insurgents in Iraq. But public perceptions of the Iranian threat have not increased over the past year. Currently, a quarter of Americans volunteer Iran as the country representing the “greatest danger” to the U.S., the highest percentage naming any single country. In February 2006, a comparable number (27%) cited Iran as the greatest threat to the U.S. And the public is split evenly over whether it is more important for the U.S. to take a firm stand against Iranian actions or to try to avoid a military conflict with Iran (43% each).[...]
About a third of Americans (34%) say they have read or heard a lot about reports that Iran may be providing weapons to insurgent groups in Iraq. Public awareness of this issue is somewhat lower than it was regarding Iran’s nuclear program last September (41%).
Overall, Americans are evenly divided over whether it is more important to “take a firm stand” against Iran or to avoid a military conflict with Iran. The political and ideological differences over how to approach Iran resemble the divisions over Iraq. Nearly two-thirds of conservative Republicans (65%) and a smaller majority of moderate and liberal Republicans (55%) believe it is more important to take a firm stand against Iran; among Democrats, majorities of liberals (60%), and conservatives and moderates (51%), say it is more important to avoid a military conflict with Iran.
In addition, 40% of conservative Republicans cite Iran as the country that represents the greatest danger to the United States; no more than three-in-ten in any other partisan group identifies Iran as the country presenting the greatest danger. However, somewhat fewer conservative Republicans name Iran as the biggest threat to the U.S. than did so a year ago (48%). [emphasis added]
Hat tip to MyDD
As good of news as it may be that Americans do not want war with Iran, the administration has consistently shown a blatant disregard for the what the public think. Their political elitist train of thought simply cast off poll numbers such as these with the canned assertions of: “It’s a very complex situation…people haven’t seen the evidence we have…it’s complicated…” That sort of rhetoric has been safeguarding the administration and Bush for quite some time, but I hope this time the public and the media aren’t going to swallow what they’re feeding us.

So because this dumb bitch at work screwed up some 1098/99 forms for tax season (which may end up costing the bank $15,000-$25,000) and got fired because of it, guess who doesn't get to go on vacation during Spring Break like he'd planned? I'll give your three guesses.
Nope.
Nope.
That's right, ME! Son-of-a-fucking shit-monkey! So now getting the community service done is going to be a bigger pain in the ass, though it will get done (only 5 more days left and a 'Victim Awareness Class'). I always say 'Could be worse' but this time it's all about me damn it. Fuck those kids in China without shoes and vegetables, I want my vacation motherfucker!
There I'm done, time to get back to work now (where I've been since 11AM, and will be at until 11PM).
P.S. Yes I know, some people don't have jobs with health benefits and vacations to bitch about. I know there are people out there that don't know where their next meal is coming from, and I know there are people who would love to have what I am bitching about. But lordy damn it's my right to be able to let off some steam about shit. There you have it, this will never be spoken of again.

Related LinksIn a recent letter posted on House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s website, the GOP revealed their strategic angle on the Iraq escalation debate. In the letter GOP Reps. John Shadegg and Peter Hoekstra told their collegues that the best way to argue the debate with the Democrats is to NOT talk about Iraq, because they’ll lose.
We are writing to urge you not to debate the Democratic Iraq resolution on their terms, but rather on ours.Democrats want to force us to focus on defending the surge, making the case that it will work and explaining why the President’s new Iraq policy is different from prior efforts and therefore justified.
We urge you to instead broaden the debate to the threat posed to Americans, the world, and all “unbelievers” by radical Islamists. We would further urge you to join us in educating the American people about the views of radical Islamists and the consequences of not defeating radical Islam in Iraq.
The debate should not be about the surge or its details. This debate should not even be about the Iraq war to date, mistakes that have been made, or whether we can, or cannot, win militarily. If we let Democrats force us into a debate on the surge or the current situation in Iraq, we lose.

You know at least the GOP are self-aware and know where they stand on this debate. It’s nice to know that the GOP priority is in simply not losing the debate, and not whether or not escalation is the best thing for our troops, for America and for the Global War on Islamo-fascist Terrorism (or whatever they’re calling it these days).

This fucking documentary is fucking brilliant. I really like the fact that they included several conservatives and evangelicals in the discussion including Pat Boone, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Alan Keyes and a few others. The fact that these fools attribute to coming dark ages and severe deterioration of society on a simple four-letter word and its ilk fucking amazes me.
If you watch this on DVD (which you sort of have to) be sure to watch the extra interviews with Billy Connelly and Hunter S. Thompson. Fucking awesome!
The word has been around since the 15th century, but only now has it been seen as such a vast destroyer of humanity. Fuck these idiots and fuck the FCC. The movie ends on a most brilliant quote from a god among men:

Wow, Darfur is such a fun experience!
I know this is somehow supposed to be educational and all, but making a game out of foraging for water while trying to avoid armed militants is just fucking tasteless. Don't get caught, or you'll end up in the SimDarfur game they have, where you struggle not to starve in a refugee camp and avoid “imminent militia attacks,” it boggles the mind. No surprise this is a product of mtvU, the heavily corporate sponsored swill they barf out on college campuses.
Honestly though, couldn't they think of a better way to spread the message of the crisis in Darfur than with a ill-conceived flash game?
